Types of Dental Emergency

When you are in pain or experience a trauma that affects your mouth or teeth, it is easy to let panic cloud your judgment. You probably don’t want to seek immediate dental treatment unless you really need it, but equally, there are some problems that you shouldn’t delay getting professional help for.

Some of the most common types of dental emergency that we see and can help you with include the following:

Lost fillings or crowns

Dental restorations are designed to last for as long as possible, but they aren’t completely infallible. Over time, it is quite usual to lose a filling or crown, particularly if you are eating something hard, sticky or chewy. Unfortunately, the underlying teeth can be sensitive, and eating or drinking when you have a lost restoration puts you at greater risk of developing toothache and decay. Therefore, it is important to get it replaced as soon as possible. We may be able to replace a filling during your emergency dentist appointment, but in the case of crowns, a temporary version will be fitted until a custom-designed replacement can be made.

Knocked-out tooth

Accidents and injuries happen when we least expect them. A knocked-out tooth is something that often occurs when we experience a blow to the face. In some cases, it may be possible to save the tooth by collecting it (don’t touch the root!), popping it in a container of water or milk, and bringing it to us as within the hour. If we can’t save it, we can at least patch you up and arrange an appointment for you to come back and discuss your tooth replacement options.

Broken tooth

Even the strongest teeth can weaken over time, and this means that virtually anyone can suffer from a crack or fracture. They most often occur when a tooth has a filling large enough to weaken the integrity of the tooth, or the root is damaged by infection, causing the tooth to lose strength. Breaks can range from hairline cracks to actual parts of the tooth breaking off. The severity of your breakage will dictate the treatment needed, which could range from a simple crown to root canal treatment and more.

Severe toothache

As far as pain goes, a toothache is often cited as one of the worst types there is. Whether you have been experiencing a chronic dull ache for days on end that painkillers aren’t helping, or you are feeling acute agony every time you try and eat or drink, a toothache can make life miserable. When you experience a toothache, it is usually your body trying to tell you that something is wrong with your mouth. It could be any of a number of problems - an infected tooth, an abscess, exposed roots, a fracture… our job is to determine the cause and treat it so that your pain is alleviated, at least temporarily until a permanent solution can be arranged.

Mouth trauma

Not all accidents necessarily affect our teeth. Sometimes injuries occur to the soft tissue of the mouth, such as the gums, palate or tongue. If these cause pain or persistent bleeding, or if you have something lodged in your mouth, it is important to get urgent assistance from an emergency dentist.

This list is not exhaustive, and we will happily assess any dental emergency. If you experience an issue which you think requires urgent attention, our team will triage your problem over the phone and advise you if you need to come in immediately or whether we need to make you a prompt regular appointment.
